Tolmarin ur Mirwin ur Laza, by Christian Thalmann
Obrenaj Healer

Tolla grew up in the oldest Obrenaj community in Llaza, the locom known as Laza after its adopted city. He was educated in the Obrenje ways by the caretakers of his community but spent most of his free time with the children of the neighbourhood and got to know Llaza well, despite being a quiet and shy child.

At the age of eleven he travelled along with a group of his adult relatives back to Tagrozhna in Obrenaja, where he spent six years with his own people. He picked up singing soon after his voice broke and was taught the basics of Armoured Voice techniques. After witnessing the death of a colleague in a riding accident he decided to dedicate himself to the art of saving lives, starting out as a gofer in the local healing houses and slowly acquiring enough knowledge to assist with the senior healers.

Upon his return to Llaza at the age of 17 he continued and intensified his study of the medical sciences at the hands of an Obrenje doctor at the Healing Hands Foundation, a charitable organisation that offers emergency medical care to those in need. His locom scarcely recognised this tall, handsome, confident young man with an energetic drive. Tolla quickly learned that women found him very attractive and is happy to capitalise on this (Obrenaj have many different words for romantic kissing but no word for virginity). Despite a string of brief affairs his heart belongs to a young Viskataroje nurse at the Healing Hands Foundation named Sinel (shi-NEEL), possibly in part because she seems immune to his charms.

Tolla is tall with tanned skin, blue eyes and copper-brown hair, a result of his mixed Pelevni and Casanje heritage. He is a typical Obrenaj in temperament, enjoying life and freedom, wine, song, women and the wind in his hair. He works as an assistant for the Healing Hands Foundation and sometimes rides a swift shandix antelope in order to get to patients more quickly.

Using Tolla
Tolla was created originally for a play-by-email game set in Llaza, and this is an attempt to replicate his abilities using d20 mechanics. Note that, as an Obrenaj, Tolla doesn't think of his spells as magic, but as techniques employing the scientific principles of "natural harmonics" to produce effects using specially modulated vocal sound waves. In game terms, however, they work as spells.

Tolla can be found in Llaza and may arrive to help injured characters. He's a lover (of life, song and women) not a fighter despite his training in Wind Style defensive techniques. Thus player characters may find it necessary to defend him against some of the rougher elements of Llaza that cannot be won round with a smile.

The Healing Hands Hospice and its emergency medical team can be a useful resource for Llaza-based adventurers, or even be used as the basis for a series of adventures inspired by medical or emergency services dramas. Having characters who are expected to rescue people and minimise casualties would make a change of pace from the more typical style of adventuring.
